A Trademark Automatic Approval System, Indonesia`s Latest Program to Improve Intellectual Property Services in 2023

The Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) – Indonesian Ministry of Justice and Human Rights launched a Trademark Automatic Approval System, called Trademark POP (Persetujuan Otomatisasi Pelayanan) on 30 October 2022.

Recently, the DGIP has decided that 2023 will be Trademark Year. The Trademark POP System is expected to improve Intellectual Property services in 2023.

Currently, this Trademark POP System can be used for three post-trademark application services, i.e., Renewal, License Recordation, and Official Excerpt.

All three can be done automatically to improve better services to the community and boost the economy. These post-trademark application services can automatically be completed in under ten minutes.

Trademark Renewal Automatic Approval System (Renewal POP System)

This service can be used by Trademark Owner who has received a 10-year trademark certificate and wants to use his/her trademark for the next ten years. A request for Trademark Renewal can be submitted six months before the trademark protection period ends.

To request a Trademark Renewal, The Trademark Owner can log in on https://merek.dgip.go.id/, select “Online Post-Application”, then select “Trademark Renewal”, and complete all the requested data and/or documents.

Trademark License Recordation Automatic Approval System (License Recordation POP System)

According to Indonesian Law No. 20 of 2016 regarding Trademarks and Geographical Indications, a license means any permit granted by the owner of a registered trademark to another party based on a written agreement by laws and regulations to use the registered trademark.

This license needs to be recorded so that the business can run smoothly and anticipate fraud by one of the parties.

The benefit of License Recordation is to protect and record the licensed trademark from the Trademark Owner to the Licensee by laws and regulations.

To request a License Recordation, the Trademark Owner can log in on https://merek.dgip.go.id/, select “Online Post-Application”, then select “License Recordation”, and complete all the requested data and/or documents.

Trademark Official Excerpt Automatic Approval System (Official Excerpt POP System)

An excerpt is a copy of the registered trademark certificate. Excerpt can be used as a substitute if the original certificate is lost.

An official excerpt contains the same official information as the certificate which is needed by various parties for certain needs.

To request an Official Excerpt, the Trademark Owner can log in on https://merek.dgip.go.id/, select “Online Post-Application”, then select “Official Excerpt Application”, and complete all the requested data and/or documents.
